Closure notice March 08

If you are thinking about a domestic wind turbine the first thing you will want to do is collect some data on the wind at your location. Wind is very susceptible to local variation - and that’s very local indeed, so the purchase of a ‘wind survey’ for your postcode is only going to give you a very general idea of your conditions at the point where you are thinking of positioning your turbine.

You then find that you can easily buy a hand held anemometer (or wind gauge), but unless you are going to stand on your roof for ages that will not be a lot of use! Fixed anemometers with a remote readout are very expensive, which is not helpful if you may only want one for a trial.

Having discovered these problems we then found the answer, and as a result we started to import the Vortex remote anemometer.

Anemometer-BC1200

It is a wind sensor with a digital display. It registers wind speeds up to about 70 mph. It is powered by a coin battery which will give several months of typical use. It comes with a 25' wire as standard, which you can extend with ordinary bell wire if required. Mount the sensor on your pole or on the building, and lead the wire indoors so you can monitor the results on the display.

The little display shows the current wind speed, and also records the average and maximum wind speeds since you last zeroed the display. It also records the number of hours the wheel has been turning indicating that there has not been a dead calm!

We add the readings to our spreadsheet at the same time each day. As you can also get a daily Met Office forecast for your postcode, you can start to plot the forecast wind speed and gust speed against your own readings, to find out what local variations you are experiencing - e.g. different effects at different wind directions due to the effect of nearby buildings.

The Vortex Anemometer is priced at £59.99 including VAT and delivery to mainland UK.

If you require an anemometer to be sent outside mainland UK please E-mail us here so that we can quote you a price including delivery to your location.
